American figure skater Jason Brown takes the ice as a proud male figure skater in what some have deemed a “feminine” sport. However, critics could not be more incorrect in their assumption, as figure skating is undoubtedly a sport of superior athleticism that transcends gender. At the ripe age of 19, Brown has thrust himself into the spotlight early in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics by helping the United States claim a bronze medal in the Olympics’ first ever team skating event.
An avid skater since childhood, Jason Brown has a strategy to his skating that few others can boast: skating with poor eyesight. Skeptics may question how this could possibly be a “strategy”, but Brown claims that skating without the help of his prescription glasses or contacts helps him to stay more focused on his routine and less concerned with the ever judging crowd glaring down at him. Though an obscure method, Americans can not argue with the results, and can only hope Brown continues his impressive skating in these Olympics.
