The “Freshman 15” is something you have probably heard about since before you even stepped foot on campus, but guess what? It’s mostly a myth. While some students might gain a few pounds in their first year, it’s nowhere near the 15 pounds everyone talks about. On average, most freshmen gain around 3 to 7 pounds. So, why does this happen, and how can you keep yourself in check?

Why Do Some Freshmen Gain Weight?

  1. Food Freedom: For the first time, you have access to unlimited food, and let’s be real, those late-night snacks and dining hall fries can be hard to resist.
  2. Less Movement: Between classes, homework, and social events, it’s easy to skip the gym and just hang out. Less movement means fewer calories burned.
  3. Stress and Lack of Sleep: College is stressful. With late nights and early mornings, your body might crave comfort food, and insufficient sleep can mess with your appetite.
  4. Alcohol: College parties and get-togethers often mean drinking, which can add extra calories, especially if you’re snacking along the way.

How to Stay Healthy

  1. Eat Smart: Try to balance your meals with fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. While pizza and fries are tempting, opt for the healthier stuff when you can.
  2. Move Your Body: Find a fun way to stay active! Whether it’s walking to class, hitting the gym, or joining an intramural sport, aim to get some movement in each day.
  3. Manage Stress: Instead of stress-eating, find ways to relax, like meditation, yoga, or just taking breaks from studying to clear your head.
  4. Get Enough Sleep: Aim for at least 7-9 hours of sleep. Trust me, your body (and your grades) will thank you.
  5. Watch the Alcohol: If you’re drinking, try to keep it in moderation and remember that those drinks add up in calories. Eating beforehand helps, too!

The Bottom Line

The Freshman 15 is more myth than reality. With some planning and balance, you can enjoy your first year without stressing about your weight. Focus on staying active, eating well, and managing stress; you’ll keep your mind and body feeling good throughout the year!
