The Gasparilla Distance Classic is an annual road race held in Tampa, Florida, typically in late February. Established in 1978, the event has grown into one of the most popular races in the Southeast, attracting over 30,000 participants each year. Named after the legendary pirate José Gaspar, it is part of Tampa’s larger Gasparilla Festival, a city-wide celebration featuring pirate-themed parades and festivities.

The Fitzness race weekend includes multiple events to accommodate runners of all levels. Participants can choose from a 15K, 5K, half marathon, and 8K, along with multi-race challenges like the Michelob Ultra Challenge, which requires runners to complete multiple distances over the weekend. The scenic course follows Bayshore Boulevard, offering stunning views of Tampa Bay and a mostly flat terrain, making it a great race for both beginners and experienced runners looking to set personal records.

Beyond its competitive appeal, the Gasparilla Distance Classic is also known for its charitable contributions. The Gasparilla Distance Classic Association has donated over $6.5 million to local youth organizations and charities, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and local running programs. This philanthropic mission adds to the event’s significance, making it more than just a race.

The weekend also features a Health & Fitness Expo, where participants can interact with vendors, attend workshops, and prepare for race day. The post-race festivities include live music, food, and awards, creating a fun and festive atmosphere.

The Gasparilla Distance Classic continues to be a highly anticipated event, bringing together runners, spectators, and the community to celebrate fitness, fun, and Tampa’s unique pirate heritage.
