One of the most common excuses I hear for missing workouts is not wanting to take time away from the kids. I’ve got two kids and often struggle with GMS or Guilty Mother Syndrome. It’s a nasty burden, but when it comes to exercise … you can let that guilt go! Here’s why: exercising today will make you a better parent now and a parent who sticks around for a whole lotta tomorrows! Exercising is important to you, right? You feel more energetic, less stressed and happier when you do it? All of those niceties translate in to being more patient and playful when we’re with our children. When parent’s exercise, everybody wins!
With a house full of noise and a profession which requires a lot of brain power, I need – truly need – a little time for me. Exercise is my almost always my big indulgence when that time comes. Getting fit while juggling a job and/or family can be done! I often pick a high yielding exercise in which I can exert a lot of effort and burn a ton of calories in a short amount of time like running outdoors. My next best choice is heading to the gym while letting my kiddos play in the Kid’s Club; they claim it’s boring, but I know they’re safe and probably finding something nice to do. Lastly, I workout with them. I’m not afraid to do push-ups, squat jumps, crunches and more with a young audience. If they end up joining in or discovering how important fitness is to Mommy, then my “me time” served as a super “us time”. Giving yourself a chunk of time each day to do what’s best for you is truly a gift to your entire family. Take some “me time” each day and start today!
