In this series, Surprising Ways to Slash 500 Calories, we discuss a variety of ways you can easily eliminate 500 calories from your daily routine resulting in an easy weight loss of one pound per week. You may not even think these food or beverage items “count”, but they do. Our job is to help you in your weight loss goals and even if you were to burn one less calorie per day, it would add up over time.

Most people would be utterly shocked to find out that America’s favorite restaurant side item packs at 33-50% of your daily allotted calories. A side order of french fries at Chili’s Bar & Grill equates to about 520 calories, and that’s excluding the dipping sauces! Add the actual menu item you chose to accompany your fries and most meals will clear 1,000 calories with ease.  It’s great to enjoy the foods you love, but don’t forget to be reasonable with your caloric intake while you’re out. Side dishes can range drastically. Onion rings and fries are guaranteed to trash your meal. Chips don’t ALWAYS have to fill the rest of the plate in which your sandwich or burger resides. (Baked chips are fine.) Most folks choose fries, onion rings and chips out of sheer habit. Start substituting these belly busters for things like fruit, salad or veggies. Out of sight, out of mind; once you kick the habit of ordering greasy fried carbs … you’ll be shocked by the difference in your waistline and by your respectable ability to say “no” when they asked “if you would like fries with that”.
