Summer is finally here! For many, that means more time spent outside under the hot summer sun. Unfortunately, the sun’s UV rays can damage your skin in just 15 minutes. However, there are a variety of ways to protect yourself and your family. Here are a few beach bag essentials for summer activities.
Sunscreen
Sunburn is the worst! Sunscreen is an absolute must, especially during a day at the beach. Remember to wear a sunscreen that is at least SPF 15. Of course, sweating and swimming will cause sunscreen to ware off. Sunscreen is most effective when it is reapplied at least every two hours.
Lip Balm with SPF
Your lips can get sunburn too! Make sure to keep a lip balm with SPF 15 on hand this summer.
Sunglasses
Protect your eyes and the skin around them by wearing sunglasses. Make sure that your sunglasses block both UVA and UVB rays, although most sunglasses sold in the United States already do.
Hat
Whether its a floppy sun hat or baseball cap, a hat can be your best friend in the summer sun. Try to avoid hats that let sunlight through, and pick one made of tightly woven fabric. Remember, if the hat does not shade the back of your neck and ears, use plenty of sunscreen to protect them.
Shirt
Choose a shirt that will protect your skin from the sun! T-shirts are great, but a wet T-shirt will not offer as much sun protection as a dry shirt. Also consider that a darker colored shirt may offer more protection than a lighter colored one. Another great option are shirts that are made to protect your skin from the sun. For example, many fishing shirts are made with special fabric to protect you from UV rays.
Shade
Although it may not fit in your beach bag, try to pack a beach umbrella. Not only will the umbrella provide you with a cool, shady spot, but it will also help to protect you and your family from the harmful UV rays.
