I’m not going to talk politics here. Trust me – I LOVE to talk politics and spend lots of time doing so. But it’s probably not appropriate here at Fitzness.com, so instead I’ll talk about Presidential fitness. We all know President Obama has a great body. Love him or hate him, the one thing we can all come together on is the fact that the man looks pretty great with his shirt off. I’m delighted to see that our vast group of Republican candidates also look pretty fit. Of course, a great body does NOT make a great leader; they are mostly, mutually exclusive topics. However, I’ve been pleased by both Mr. Obama’s and President George W. Bush’s commitment to fitness.

Why? Well, daily exercise is an important part of managing stress and maintaining a clear head. The most important job in the world requires these things. As well, a busy president’s schedule requires a lot of energy, endurance and strength. A healthy President, in my book, is more capable of enduring the daunting duties and daily travel necessary. Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Jon Huntsman, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul all look look like they take a decent amount of care when it comes to their health.

This trend is great not only for our future President, but I think it’s valuable to Americans as well. I can’t tell you how many people who declared they were “too busy to exercise” I’ve convinced otherwise by stating “both President’s Bush and Obama exercise on a daily basis while running the USA, don’t tell me you’re busier than they are!” This argument has worked wonders I assure you. As well, it offers feel good properties for American citizens. I can’t imagine anyone NOT being touched by pictures of Mr. Bush off on a run with wounded soldier wearing a prosthetic leg.

I’ll never forget the day when I looked out of my UF dorm window to see then – Presidential candidate – Bill Clinton jogging by. It was exciting and surely humanized him. Seeing his red face, sweaty t-shirt and determination in his eyes made me realize he was just like every other person I had ever taught fitness to. A regular guy, just doing his best. So … I’m excited about the politics ahead and I’m excited to see that if nothing else … we may end up with another role model for health and fitness in the White House. We’ll soon follow up with details about what each candidate does to stay fit.

Which President do you think has been the best role model for health and fitness? Kennedy? Bush 41 or 43? Obama? Washington? Let us know and why!
