Presidential Candidates Eating Habits on the Campaign Trail

As the Republican race reaches a critical point, potential GOP presidential candidates are in full gear, battling each other and preparing for the chance to take on President Obama. But with all the talk about abortion, religion, corporate tax, war, etc., one questions still lingers; how do they fuel up for the long campaign and 20 debates?

Political campaigning relies on a lot of time and money, and even more energy. GOP Presidential candidates have to look and feel great, as an off day could smash their chances to run for the White House. Not much is discussed about the candidate diets but it still plays an important role. After all, don’t you want a healthy President, who can handle the stress and constant criticism, to represent and make decisions for our country?

The campaign trail leaves little time for picky eaters, most candidates have to grab a quick bite before meet-and-greets, debates, and speeches.

  • Mitt Romney usually strives to eat foods like turkey, broccoli, and rice, but has been known to get KFC and eat fried chicken after peeling off the skin.
  • Ron Paul prefers eating salads and soups, but has a weak spot for chocolate chip cookies
  • Newt Gingrich has a famous appetite for sweets, his favorite being ice cream. However, on Wednesday he admitted to giving up ice cream for the Catholic tradition of Lent, but refuses to give up McDonald’s.
  • Rick Santorum hasn’t mentioned much about his diet, but we do know that he stays away from caffeine and starts every day with 50 push-ups. What a great way to get the blood flowing!
  • President Obama hasn’t disclosed much of his diet throughout his term, but we know he is a sports-lover and The First Lady is active in fighting childhood obesity. They have been known to frequent burger joints, but they still look pretty fit. Maybe they’re secretly devouring veggie burgers.

Candidates often dine on local cuisine to try to connect with their supporters, so that also plays a factor in their diet. We’d love to see these Presidential candidates pull-off what Congressman Aaron Schock does, but we, at the least, hope they prioritize diet and exercise so they’ll remain at their physical best on the campaign trail.
