When it comes to doing my hair for the gym and beyond, I always have two requirements: the hair must stay off my face and neck and stay in place. As a woman with long hair, it is often difficult to find the perfect style to not only match my requirements, but also match my work out. Just as every woman’s hair differs, so does every exercise you do. Here are my favorite ways to style my hair based on the type of work out I have planned for the day.
High Intensity Cardio:
The best hairstyle for a high intensity workout is a high top-knot bun with a headband. The key to this style is making sure that the bun is secured very tightly. Whether you are on a fast-paced run, taking your favorite cycle class, or busting out your favorite moves in Zumba, it is imperative that your hair stays put. I love a high bun because the hair stays off your face and neck, while the headband ensures that sweat isn’t falling into your eyes. Secure your hair with multiple elastics or bobby pins so that your hair is never a problem during cardio workouts.
Yoga:
When doing yoga, I always wear a long, single french braid. Not only does the braid help to keep the hair away from your face and off of your neck, many yoga positions require you to keep your head down and having a braid means that your hair won’t be falling down over your face. Moreover, a french braid also provides a flat surface on the top of your head, as opposed to a pony tail or bun. As you move into yoga inversions, your hair won’t cause you to lose your balance!
Strength and Resistance:
While many hairstyles can be used for strength and resistance workouts that don’t require a lot of movement, I have always preferred to style my hair in a high ponytail that is braided down the back. The high ponytail keeps your hair out of your face, and combining it with a braid means your hair won’t get caught on your equipment. The high ponytail has a downside-hair tends to whip in your face with a lot of movement. That’s why it is the perfect style for a workout where you aren’t moving around as much.
