Hummus

It’s 3pm and you’re starving, but you don’t want to undo your healthy day of eating.  Don’t turn to a burst of sugar from a candy bar or doughnut and spoil your dinner.  With some simple planning, you can have a filling and nutritious snack you can feel proud about come the end of the day.

Grab some raw vegetables and rinse them off.  Broccoli, carrots, celery are all common choices, but branch out with snap peas, cauliflower, and colorful peppers. Cut them into manageable pieces and set aside.  Next, choose a whole grain or wheat pita bread from your grocery or bakery section.  Slice up this bread in triangles and set aside with the vegetables.  Finally, pick up some premade hummus; either in the refrigerated dip section or near the cheeses.  We like the  brand Sabra for hummus.

Dip your vegetables and pita bread into the hummus and enjoy!  The fiber in some of the vegetables will help keep you full while the hummus is rich in iron and vitamin C.  So next time your afternoon hunger hits, don’t ruin your nutritious day with junk food snacks.  Slice up the veggies and pita, and enjoy your hummus dip snack!
