A Ghoulishly Great Time

Halloween is really one of those holidays that could gain the top spot on many lists at the “most fun” holiday. The wealth of spooky decorations, crazy costumes, hay rides, pumpkin carvings, parties and the big night of Trick or Treating makes it a winner for anyone who’s still young at heart. Our goal here at Fitzness.com is to ensure that our fab fit friends like you keep all or at least MOST of the focus on that very special element of FUN and not as much attention to the element of food. Avoiding the fatitude is certainly a matter of having a great attitude, so until November begins … we want FUN to be your middle name! Focus on the fun, make the best out of the food situation and make your workouts a part of the fall festivities.

Terrific Treats for Trick or Treaters

Treats should be fabulous, but they don’t ALL have to be so darn JUNKY! Most folks are going to set out the bad stuff, so why not take a higher road, while still keeping the “coolness” in tact. Grabbing Mini Halloween Packs of Teddy Grahams,  Halloween Pretzel Packs,  mini Halloween themed Play-Do Containers and Halloween Silly Bandz is just as easy as the stuff coated and stuffed with sugar or lard. You might even consider passing out mini bottled waters with orange and black ribbons tied around the rim. Trick or Treating is hard work! This will be a GIFT to everyone who stops at your door. If everyone offered a slightly healthier choice, without excluding ANY of the fun … wouldn’t we all be better for it?  Adam Bornstein, editorial director of LIVESTRONG.com, came up with a few options too.

Chocolate

  • Trick: Hershey’s bars have 210 cals, 13 g fat and 24 g sugar
  • Treat: Skinny Cow Fudge bars have 100 cals, 2 g fat, and 13 g sugar. That’s 1/2 the calories, 1/6 the fat and almost 1/2 the sugar!

Nuts

  • Trick: Snickers bar has 280 cals, 14 g fat and 30 g sugars
  • Treat:  CocoVia chocolate covered almonds have 140 cals, 11 g fat and 8 g sugar. That’s 1/2 the calories and almost 1/4 of the sugar!
 Mint
  • Trick: York Peppermint Patties have 140 cals, 2.5 g of fat and 25 g of sugar!
  • Treat:  Red Bird Peppermint Puffs have 60 cals, 0 g fat and 15 g sugar. That’s 1/2 the calories, and more than 1/3 less sugar than Peppermint Patties!

Just say Boo! to a Bigger Bum: Parties and meals also offer opportunities to be creative without wreaking havoc on your body. Now, that’s a SPOOKY thing to do! You really don’t want the fun of Halloween to haunt your hips for the next few months, so put forth some effort! My friends at Flat Out Flat Bread have some awesome recipes and ideas for preserving both great presentation, great flavor and a great body.

Recipe for Spooky Snake Bites from the Flatout Facebook Page.

This recipe is way better for you than ordering a foot-long sub from the deli for your Halloween party. Swap in mustard for ranch dressing to save extra calories, if desired. Find more healthy Halloween Recipes here.

  • 1 package Flatout® Flatbread
  • 6 tablespoons low fat ranch dressing
  • 1 pound Deli turkey, sliced thin
  • 1 package sliced cheese
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • Romaine lettuce
  • 2 strips red bell pepper

Assemble wraps by spreading dressing evenly across each piece of Flatout® Flatbread. On one rounded end, layer remaining ingredients except for bell pepper. Roll tightly and cut into 6 pinwheel pieces. Form into curvy line on a platter to form snake. Insert bell pepper into first pinwheel to create tongue for the head of the snake, if desired.
