There aren’t many things more inconvenient than having trouble falling asleep. Your bed is supposed to be your retreat, your sanctuary to recover from the day and recharge for tomorrow. There are many techniques used to combat insomnia. People swear by everything from sleeping pills to warm baths, but there may be another solution; a late night workout.

Researchers in Brazil found that exercising for 30 minutes at least two hours before bed caused people to fall asleep faster and allowed them to reach their REM cycles sooner. REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is the period of sleep where dreams occur and the greatest restorative benefit happens.

Don’t do anything too vigorous before bed since exercising too hard can leave you amped up when it’s time to sleep. Try a moderately paced walk or jog and then hit the sheets. It might be an inconvenience, but when your alarm goes off in the morning you’ll be glad you did it.
