Essential Oils

You’ve heard of them, you’ve seen them, you’ve smelled them. What are they really and what can they be used for?

Essential oils are plant extracts made by steaming parts of a plant such as the leaves, stem, or flower. They can be used for a bunch of different reasons such as skin health, moisturizers, aroma for massages, aromatherapy, fragrances, shampoo or soap, and even perfume or cologne.

Aromatherapy

When used for aromatherapy, essential oils are placed in a diffuser with some water. A diffuser is a device that contains an electric fan that blows air at the water, causing the oils to disperse into the air. When inhaled, the scent molecules travel through the olfactory nerves (in the nose) and to the amygdala (the emotional center of the brain). This creates a calming and refreshing atmosphere for an individual.

As aromatherapy continues to gain popularity, scientists have started to study the mental health effects of inhaling essential oil fragrances. studies have generated consistent results showing that aromatherapy can help reduce:

  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Depression

Although more studies need to be conducted to prove the efficacy of aromatherapy, the preliminary outcomes appear promising. While aromatherapy will not “cure” a health issue, it is a natural remedy that can be used during periods of emotional imbalance – providing individuals with feelings of relaxation, stimulation, and tranquility.

Other Uses

Additionally, essential oils can be used to improve skin quality. For example, lavender, one of the most popular and versatile oils, can help soothe dry skin (eczema) and calm acne flare-ups. However, make sure to dilute the oil and read the ingredients on the bottle before applying to the skin. Individuals with sensitive skin or allergies should proceed with caution as essential oils are not regulated by the FDA. You may want to consult your physician before using them on your skin.

Another popular essential oil is rosemary, most commonly used for focusing and studying in a calming atmosphere. Moreover, it provides a boost of energy on top of a more active mind.
