We’ve all been there; you go to visit old friends at a gathering and leave the party having consumed more than half of a day’s worth of calories. And we all know that most of those calories consumed came from mindless eating because you felt awkward, not knowing what to do with your hands. On top of this, in many cultures it’s rude to say no when someone offers you something to eat. But have no fear, there are options that will have you leaving a party feeling as fit and trim as you did walking in.

  • Bring your own healthy and low calorie dish to share. Ensure the majority of your calories come from that.
  • Instead of keeping a plate of food in your hand, carry non-caloric drinks around.
  • Eat slowly. You wouldn’t scarf down food in the middle of a good conversation, so don’t do it anywhere else. You’re at a party, not a feast.
  • Stick to the lean proteins, fruits, and veggies. Avoid the sweets and the empty carbs as if they were “the plague.”
  • Try to avoid hanging out in the kitchen. Take a seat on the couch or find something to watch with everybody else.
  • Eat a healthy meal or snack before you attend the party to lessen the hunger you might experience for unhealthy party food.

Remember, it’s NOT rude to stay on track with your weight loss goals when those around you are not. YOU, and you alone, are the one in control of your body. Own it!
