You’d be surprised by how many foods have deceptively high salt contents. Just because things don’t fall in the “salty snack” category or taste extremely salty, doesn’t mean they aren’t harboring large amounts of hidden salt. Men’s Health just published this list which reveals the top 10 foods to be cautious about:
- Breads and Rolls: Can range from 153 mg. of sodium (bread) to 500 milligrams. (whole bagel)
- Deli and Cured Meats: Low sodium meats 100 mg. – Normal high salt meats 1,000 mg. per slice
- Pizza: Ranges from 194 – 900 mg of sodium
- Fresh and Processed Poultry: Fresh organic chicken (53 mg.) to processed (500-1000 mg)
- Soup: Dependent on soup, but can range from salt-free to 1,000 mg. (Campbell’s is notoriously high)
- Cheeseburgers/sandwiches: Can range in high sodium content as they use salt as a buffer for taste. 500 mg – 2,000 mg.
- Cheese: 1 slice of processed American cheese, 400 mg. Other cheeses can range 100-500mg.
- Pasta Dishes
- Meat Dishes
- Pretzels, Chips, Popcorn – All use excessive amounts of sodium as they are mostly glazed with salt – usually 1,000 mg or more.
If monitoring sodium content is a high priority for you, do some research before you buy, order or accept various foods.
