Yesterday, I played hostess to a ridiculous amount of fun with a few of the most ridiculous people I could find. I work with the company called Ubisoft which makes amazing games for the Wii, XBOX, etc … and normally I’m asked to put on my fitness expert hat and personally review their active inventions. This time though, they asked me to do something so very up my silly alley. They asked me to host a dance party featuring the Ubisoft game ABBA You Can Dance. I had considered doing so at night with cocktails and such, but I bonked myself on the head and said “Hey dummy! You’re all about Fitzness – find a better way!” So I did. My schedule is flexible, so I decided to choose some friends who work from home and invite them to come play while the kids were in school. It was awesome! Jen, Becky, Lori and Nicki showed up at 11:00 AM to rock my house. Hooray!
Since I’m already pretty great at this stuff and they were total novices … I thought I’d test the game by just throwing the controls in their hands and pressing start. They began with tons of giggles and surprised faces, but quickly found their rhythm, jamming along to “Dancing Queen”. The dance routines are creative, fairly easy to follow, and provide enough repetition making it easy to predict moves as each song progresses. We all had a genuinely fun time dancing and “playing” at a time where we’d usually be alone on a computer or doing something else that was totally un-fun. BOO for that. After dancing to a bunch of fun ABBA hits like “Waterloo”, “Take a Chance on Me”, “Mama Mia” and more, we decided to take on a challenge called “Mini Musical” which had each of my fab friends taking on a unique character and dancing together as if they were in a Broadway show. It was hysterical! They laughed while doing it. I laughed AT them doing it. There was lots and lots of laughing. Lori, in particular, was pretty funny as she jammed out as her character “Butch” who played guitar like a pro. Funny, funny stuff.
When I was ready to kick every body out and make them go back to their real lives, everyone raved about how much fun they had, and I think two of them are on a mission to buy both the Wii and the Abba You Can Dance game for Christmas. Ho! Ho! Hooray! From a fitness perspective, I can give this game two thumbs up. You shouldn’t expect an advanced level training session, but you can expect a moderate level of exercise to help get you fit in a fun way. I personally own a few dance games and think they’re an excellent choice when the idea of gym-style exercise just doesn’t seem ideal. ABBA You Can Dance can be found here on Amazon.com!
