Ever wonder how actor Steven Yeun physically prepares for his role as Glenn Rhee in the AMC hit series, The Walking Dead? Having to play a character that must seem strong and agile while simultaneously malnourished is difficult to make a reality, but Yeun is able to pull it off!
1. Yeun had an overall vision that he successfully portrayed. As previously stated, Glenn needed to be a strong, yet malnourished man. Yeun knew and fully understood this concept when physically preparing for the role. He needed to train in a manner that would give him a strong, yet not bulky, appearance. His overall approach was to stay healthy and active.
2. Boxing was his go-to workout. Yeun found that boxing best prepared him for his role as Glenn because the workouts targeted strength and agility while preventing him from becoming overly muscular. He found it was the perfect exercise to achieve his physical goals while training for his action roles.
3. Yeun naturally became skinnier once shooting began. Yeun and the other cast members of “The Walking Dead” considered taking a week-long camping trip in order to look more disheveled and skinnier when shooting. However, this was unnecessary because he found once shooting began he naturally started to look thinner.
