Do you ever wonder how exactly celebs and stars are able to look as glamorous as they do? We were lucky enough to sit with Fitz’s make-up artist, Kara Winslow, to get the full scoop on how Fitz makes herself camera ready. Fitz mainly uses the “your best friend” or “ybf” make-up line, which is department store quality make-up with convenient store prices! This stuff is great for your face and easy on your wallet. The following steps recount Fitz’s make-up routine for the face, eyes and lips:
Face
Step 1: Primer. This helps fill in pores and fine lines to smooth out your canvas, or face, to get you ready for all of the make-up. Without primer, fine lines can be accentuated rather than hidden. This also helps make-up stay in place through anything- even sweat!
Step 2: After the primer, use foundation to set the base of your make-up. Like primer, this helps smooth out the skin. After the foundation, use concealer for any discoloration such as dark circles around your eyes, or even blemishes or redness. The goal is to make your skin look picture perfect.
Step 3: After the previous three products, use powder to set everything.
Step 4: Next are colors! After you powder your face, use bronzer below the cheek bone to accentuate your facial shape, then use a thin line of blush above the bronzer and blend the two products evenly together.
The camera takes away the face’s natural structure and gives it a flatter look. This combination of bronzer and blush makes your face seem to have “shadows” in the right areas, giving it back it’s shape.
Eyes
Step 5: The first part of the eye make-up to start with is the shadow. The best shadows to use are mat colors. Shimmer and sparkle make people look older and are bad for the camera. There are four places to apply the shadow on your eye depending on the shade:
- The lightest shade should be placed below your eyebrow line.
- The second lightest shade should be put on the eye lid or the lash line.
- The darkest color after that should be applied to the crease of your eye.
- The darkest color should be applied to the corner of your eyelid in a “V” shape, with one line right above the outer side of your eyelid and the other along the outer crease.
Natural, mat colors work for every eye color. It doesn’t matter what color you apply as long as it has these different shades! Fitz uses eight eye-ssentials from the “ybf” make-up line.
Step 6: After the eyeshadow, time to line! Apply a full line of black eyeliner on the top eyelid and a third of a line on the bottom lid. Start the third of the line on the outer edge of the eye to make your eye look more open. Applying an entire line on the bottom lid will make your eye look more closed.
Step 7: Apply black mascara on your lashes in a zig-zag motion to blend the liner and the lashes together. The zig-zag motion will prevent your lashes from lumping together.
Fitz wears fake lashes on TV and uses a duo clear eyelash adhesive to apply them. If you are using fake lashes, look for spaced eyelashes on a strip. These are easy to apply and look more real than lashes, which are clumped together. Trim the lashes to fit your eyelid length (they are often longer) and use an eyelash curler to blend your real lashes with the fake ones. Be sure to use a silicone pad, NOT a rubber one! Rubber will cause the lashes to stick to the curler, which will likely pull your real lashes.
Step 8: This next step is often forgotten by many, but is very important- the brows! The “perfect” eyebrow should have the dimensions mentioned below:
- Start of your brow- If you place the base of your finger along the side of your nose and point up, this should be where your brow starts.
- Arch of your brow- Place the base of your finger along the side of your nose and point to the outside of your eye color, or the iris; where this points to should be the peak of your eyebrow arch.
- End of your eyebrow- Place the base of your finger along the side of your nose and point to the outside of your eye. The end of your eyebrow should be along this point.
After you have sculpted your eyebrows, use “light, feathery strokes” with an eyebrow pencil to give them a full look. Fitz uses the ybf automatic eyebrow pencil,which will automatically match to the color of your eyebrow. The pencil will darken depending on the amount of pressure used and is able to match 22 different shades.
Lips
Step 9: Line your lips starting from the outside, in order to give them a fuller look. After you line your lips, blend well with your lipstick. Fitz likes to use bright colors for the camera, like fuchsia!
