Walt Disney World in Florida is possibly the healthiest family vacation destination in the nation.  Between the  superbly implemented healthy food initiatives and the overwhelming amount of active options offered … you may be blown away by the new direction you can now take within these magical parks and resorts. Did you know that children’s menu choices have switched from mainly burgers and fries to grilled chicken strips with carrots and unsweetened applesauce on the side? Lowfat milk and water are offered with them. Impressive, right? In fact, if you’d like your child to have unhealthy choices like french fries and soda, you’ll have to go out of your way to ask for the bad stuff instead.   As a Mommy who often has to fight for healthy choices for my kids, this elates me. You’ll also be happy to know that Disney Dining chefs are both willing and able to accommodate any dietary allergies, needs or restrictions. I don’t think one could find such care anywhere else outside of a medical facility.

I used a high-tech fitness tool called the BodyBugg while we ventured through the theme parks a while back. This device, worn on our upper right arm, accurately counts how many calories are burned while wearing it. My day at the Magic Kingdom provided phenomenal results. On an average day in my life, including a 90 minute vigorous workout…I burn about 1700 calories. Spending the day at the Magic Kingdom without any deliberate exercise…I burnt almost 2600 calories! I would have to exercise vigorously for four hours straight to equal that at home.

At the Walt Disney World Resort, you can easily create a wildy healthy adventure. With the proper food choices and a bunch of fun activities thrown in, you may even leave the resort healthier than you were when you arrived! Besides walking through theme parks for hours on end, there are tons of active things for you to do while enjoying this magical world of entertainment. Enjoy this busy-body style fun and then relax at your resort spa with a massage. Ahhhhh. Now that’s how Disney should be done!

  • Running up stairs to ride down mega slides at Blizzard Beach burns tons of calories and offers a terrific lower body workout.
  • Veggie burgers and fruit salad are sold near the Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
  • Walk any one of the four beautiful golf courses on Disney property instead of riding a golf cart and burn tons of calories.
  • Skip the giant turkey leg and go for a fresh baked potato sold near the Haunted Mansion at the Magic Kingdom.
  • Aqua jogging or swimming around the one mile Castaway Creek loop (instead of riding a tube) at Typhoon Lagoon can burn 100 calories per lap.
  • You can dance the night away at Pleasure Island and burn well over 500 calories.
  • Grab some fresh fruit for a snack which is sold for $1 around all Disney theme parks.
  • Start or end each day running or walking on the jogging paths at most Disney resorts.
  • The California Grill on top of Disney’s Contemporary Resort serves the freshest produce and fish of each season. Processed ingredients are never used, and the guest’s wishes are always granted! Even the children’s macaroni and cheese is made with whole grain pasta. Top off the night with an amazing view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the balcony of the restaurant.
  • Walking around the World Showcase at EPCOT Center requires at least 5,000 steps!
  • Aboard Disney cruise ships you can run laps, play basketball, swim laps, or make muscles in state of the art fitness centers.

Disney has truly risen to the task when the public started taking better care of themselves. If a healthy lifestyle is of great importance to you – even while you’re on holiday – then Disney World, Florida just might be the perfect vacation destination for you and your family.
