Whether you’re in the mood for Zumba, squatting, or hitting the stair climber, there is a common fear among most black women in the gym: Frizz. Frizz can creep up on you whenever you sweat or your hair is exposed to moisture. But, did you know that about two of every five African-American women said they avoid exercise because of concerns about their hair? Think about it. Two of every five African-American women put themselves at risk for obesity and other health-related illnesses out of fear of the frizz monster. Here are some hair styles that can make exercise easier and save you a ton of money at the salon!

Pin-up styles

Pin-up styles are fairly easy to do. You can use regular bobby pins to hold your hair in place.

Classic Bun

The bun is a simple, chic hairstyle that never goes out of style. It helps to add a moisturizer product before styling your hair. According to WebMD, curly and kinky hair types love natural butters and oils like shea butter, jojoba, avocado, coconut milk, aloe vera, and honey because they instantly boost moisture. In an interview with Elle magazine, Andre Walker, Oprah’s longtime hair stylist, responded to a question about what ingredients protect chemically processed hair and answered “Argan oil is very popular right now and is a great nutrient for the hair. It gives it a silky quality by filling in broken cuticles, controlling frizz, and making strands reflect light.” Grip your hair and put it in a pony tail using a scrunchie or ouchless elastic. Wrap the hair in the pony tail about three times in a clockwise motion and hold in place with a no-slip grip hair clip or bobby pins. Mix it up with high bun and low bun hairdos. If you have a shorter hair, the sock bun is another snazzy style.

Braids

Braids are ideal whether you are working out, going to the pool, or about to go to sleep. When you braid your hair, it reduces the amount of stress you put on your hair follicles. Too much brushing or combing will cause your hair to snap. Just remember, don’t put braids in too tight or else it can break off hair and damage the roots.

Twist Outs

Twist outs are are low maintenance, retain hair growth and can be rocked in every season.
