Plenty of people feel a little insecure about the way they look. We are constantly striving to improve in one way or another. Some of us are in the pursuit of washboard abs while others are just trying to tone up a bit. What many people don’t realize is that a few fashion tricks can make all the difference when it comes to getting that slim looking waist. Whatever your goal may be, these fashion moves will help you out.

#1 Build a good foundation

Wearing undergarments that fit will give you support and a shapely figure. This is especially important when selecting a bra. Find a bra that shapes your silhouette by keeping your chest and waist defined. You can even try body-slimming undergarments like SPANX and Yummie Tummie. These firm fitting items will keep your bits and pieces looking super smooth and tight. Even the trimmest celebrities like Eva Longoria wear them, so don’t blow these products off.

#2 Structure your outfits

Buy the right size. Clothes that are too tight will accentuate any flaws while clothes that are too baggy will make your shape appear larger than it actually is. Find a size that flatters you. Avoid boxy clothes as they can add a bulky look. Go with neatly tapered or loose, flowing fabrics which lightly drape over your frame and don’t smother your body’s contours.

#3 Introduce a little darkness to your wardrobe

Black has a slimming effect. Whether it’s dark jeans or that little black dress, this is one of the quickest ways to appear trimmer. Try mixing it up by including a variety of rich, dark colors including deep plum, dark olive, and navy blue. To take the attention off a “problem area”, dress it in dark shades. Draw attention to your favorite body parts by adding a bit of bold color to it. YOU DECIDE where those around you focus their attention.

#4 Go vertical

Stock up on v-neck tops and other vertical necklines as these will draw the eye up and down rather than side to side, elongating and narrowing your torso. This tip goes for patterns as well. Opting for vertical details such as pinstripes and pleats will prompt the eye in the right direction, creating the illusion of slenderness. Avoid horizontal stripes whenever possible.

#5 Accentuate your positive features

If you have toned legs, flaunt them by raising your skirt’s hemline a few inches. If you have a defined waist, search for belts that really draw attention to it. Avoid calling attention to problem areas. If you carry excess weight on your thighs, don’t buy pants with embellishments at the hip.  By shining the light on the most slender parts of your body, you can slim down your overall appearance.
