According to the Financial Press Gazette, the average American spends 3.5 hours per week shopping for groceries, clothing and whatever else they need. That equates to 7.5 days per year! Now, let’s assume that most of this is done physically in a store and not online. On a three hour shopping trip, you can expect to spend half of the time walking at a slow pace and the other half standing and waiting in line. Between circling clothes racks, walking between stores at the mall, and perusing the grocery aisles you can walk up to 3 miles!
NutritionATC.edu reports that based on these facts a 100-pound person would burn approximately 400 calories while a 200-pound person could burn 750 calories. A quick estimation would figure that a 130-pound person would burn 495 calories during a three-hour shopping trip! So next time you plan on shopping, get out there and do it in person, doing it from the couch just won’t do.
