Love burgers? You shouldn’t have to sacrifice the flavors you love just because they’re traditionally in the “unhealthy” category. Did you know that restaurant burgers can pack as much as 1,500 calories? Ack! Check out the calorie and fat gram information provided above from the restaurant Fridays! The fact of the matter is that you CAN make practically any food healthier than it’s original form. On average, your hamburger beef patty runs at about 300 -500 calories per serving. This alone, would be a huge chunk of your daily allotted caloric intake if you are on a 1,500 calorie diet. Adding lettuce, tomato, and onion tacks on about 20 calories, and ketchup and mustard combined come in with about 20 calories added as well. Most people think of a hamburger as a sandwich, but what if it wasn’t? You’d walk away with a reasonable meal and still be eating the food you love. Our advice? Build a better burger by going bun-less! Skip the mayo, cheese, bacon and any other sort of fattening additions offered too. Make it a veggie burger. Saying no to the large bun provided which easily takes off about 175 calories, skipping the mayonnaise saves you 100 calories and switching from a regular patty to a veggie patty shaves off 175 calories. Skip the cheese and you’ve saved yourself an additional 50 calories as well. Those changes alone slash 500 calories. You can also turn any sandwich into a salad; instead of having your burger, chicken, fish, etc. on a bun, throw it on top of a bed of lettuce.
