In this series, Surprising Ways to Slash 500 Calories, we discuss a variety of ways you can easily eliminate 500 calories from your daily routine resulting in an easy weight loss of one pound per week. You may not even think these food or beverage items “count”, but they do. Our job is to help you in your weight loss goals and even if you were to burn one less calorie day; it would add up over time.

A chicken breast (white meat only) cooked in a nonstick pan will cost you about 97 calories. A chicken breast sauteed with one teaspoon of olive oil will cost you 219 calories. Isn’t that NUTS? That small amount of olive oil more than doubles the calorie content of your food. Horrific! You could eat a SECOND chicken breast and still not consume as many calories as you would have with one breast cooked in oil. Same goes for butter. Oil and butter may add flavor, but they will never satisfy your hunger and quite simply put … will only add fat and calories to your day. What a waste! Now I can already hear some of you saying, “but olive oil is so good for you!” It’s not good for you if you’re trying to lose weight. My advice for those diehard fans of olive oil? Eat a few olives. That’s right! At least by eating the olives (each will cost you 6-10 calories) you’ll fill your tummy a bit while benefiting from added fiber not found in plain old oil.

One tablespoon of butter packs about 100 calories. Remove a few of those from your day and you’ll definitely see results on the scale. Folks, just like I tell you not to waste your calories on beverages; don’t waste your calories on grease! When you get home, throw out the butter and throw out the oil. Every dish you love can be made without these to ghastly ingredients. When you’re at restaurants, simply ask your waiter to ensure your food is cooked without oil or butter. 90% of the time this wish will be granted without any fuss. Adding grease to your food is a recipe for weight gain. Removing the grease is a recipe for weight loss. This easy decision is yours!

What substitutions have you found of oil and butter? Share!
