Tom Cruise has starred in tons of films requiring him to be in amazing shape in order to perform death-defying stunts. His latest movie, Jack Reacher (the onscreen adaptation of the book, One Shot) is no exception, where Cruise plays an investigator known for his no-nonsense attitude and military-style personality. The described 6’5”, 250 lb hero in the books is far from the 5’7”, chiseled Tom Cruise. However, Tom has always been athletic and was determined to embody the character, showing skeptics that his training makes him the perfect fit for this role.
Fans vocalizing their concerns about his physical appearance not meeting expectations fueled Tom’s training for the film. Cruise didn’t let passionate fan’s comments bother him, but he did train even harder in spite. While he couldn’t grow eight inches, he made up for lack of height with a ripped, hard, athletic body – which oozed muscularity and strength.
Co-star Rosamund Pike told USA Today that Cruise’s passion for doing his own stunt work helps push film-making, “to its absolute limits.” In Jack Reacher, Cruise’s stunts include a large amount of combat and fighting stunts, which thrilled audiences and enhanced the film’s quality.
Tom continued his routine of hitting the gym in the mornings, followed by the movie set in the afternoons. While he keeps his specific workout regimes somewhat under wraps, he does explain that eating healthy is a huge part of his routine. Grilled chicken, fish, salads, fruits, and vegetables are all part of Tom’s regular diet. Combat training paired with cardio activities such as running and cycling keep Tom on top of his game.
